Highlights: These safaris are organized for special clients who wish to take their game viewing venture an extra mile by riding through the plains and game reserves of Kenya. The horses and guides are tough, fit, well trained and home bred from the best mares. Most of the horses are handpicked for each guest depending on the riding safari. The safaris mostly take place in the Masai Mara and in the northern ranches on open plains where there is big game and also where it is safe for the horse and riders. Riders must be fit and should be able to ride between 4-6 hours a day. The riding safaris close for April, May and November.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Kenya horse riding safari is a guided wildlife experience on horseback in scenic conservancies and private ranches, where you ride alongside zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and other plains game instead of viewing them from a vehicle, creating a more immersive and quiet connection with nature.

Horseback safaris are usually conducted in wildlife-rich conservancies and private ranchlands such as areas around Masai Mara, Laikipia, Mount Kenya, and Lake Naivasha, where riding is permitted and carefully managed for both rider safety and wildlife conservation.

Most horse riding safaris require riders to be at least intermediate level, comfortable at walk, trot, and canter in open terrain, and able to control a horse independently, although shorter introductory rides may be available for confident beginners on request.

Horseback safaris are designed with safety as a priority, using well-trained safari horses, experienced guides who understand wildlife behavior, small riding groups, and strict rules on how close to approach animals and how to move calmly through the bush.

Some operators offer shorter, gentler rides on specially selected ponies for children, subject to age, weight, and confidence, while longer multi-hour rides are generally reserved for older, more experienced riders for safety reasons.

Riding safaris operate most of the year, but many guests prefer the dry seasons from June to October and January to March for firmer ground, clear views, and easier game spotting, with peak wildlife concentrations in areas like Masai Mara during the migration months.

Day rides typically last 2–3 hours in the morning or afternoon, while multi-day horseback safaris can involve 4–7 hours in the saddle broken into sessions with picnic breaks and siestas, depending on the chosen itinerary and riders’ fitness levels.

Packages often include accommodation in camps or lodges, meals, guided horse rides, park or conservancy fees, saddles and tack, and basic protective gear such as helmets, while exclusions may cover international flights, alcoholic drinks, tips, and optional vehicle game drives or cultural visits.

Recommended items include lightweight, neutral-colored riding clothes, jodhpurs or comfortable long trousers, boots with a heel, sunhat, sunscreen, riding gloves, a reusable water bottle, and any personal protective gear you prefer, such as a well-fitted riding helmet.

Many horse riding safari operators apply a rider weight limit to protect the welfare of the horses, often in the range of 85–95 kg depending on horse size and terrain, so guests are asked to disclose weight and riding experience honestly at booking.
