Masai Mara Migration Safari - What is The Best Time For Wildebeest Viewing?

Choosing when to opt for a Masai Mara Migration safari is something that should be considered carefully if you want to maximize your time in the sheer wilderness of Kenya. For typical game viewing there’s no real ‘best time” to visit; credits to its plentiful resident wildlife & mild climate. Its wide open grasslands suggest there’s practically always something to enjoy, regardless the time you visit.

However, most of the tourists come here for the famous Wildebeest Migration and the ideal time to explore the Masai Mara for this breathtaking scene is between  July/early August and the end of November. Even though due to variable precipitation patterns, the particular timing differs from year to year. Some years, the precipitation might be before time and the wildebeest go away more quickly; at other times, late precipitation means you’ll still discover ‘stragglers’  wondering in the Mara with the “residents” (wildebeest who don’t migrate at all).

Kenya features 2 “sets” of rainy seasons. Usually, the “short” rains can be expected in November, which is considered as the best safari season. Showers during this period actually come with several advantages as they clean the dust from the air; cool down everything; and most importantly, stimulate the expansion of fresh pasture & the filling up of close by rivers that induces herds to meet their thirst. November is also wonderful for the photographers because they’ll often have huge tracts of terrain and sightseeing – particularly in Mara’s renowned conservancies.

This short phase of rain don’t really hinder your game viewing experience, even though you may have to enjoy occasional ‘raindowners’ in your game vehicle instead of the more typical ‘sundowners’.

The next phase of rains are contrarily recognized as the ‘long rains’ and generally occur in April & May. Keep in mind that, these rains are far more serious & most of the camps and lodges may close throughout this time as dirt roadways turn to sticky clay, rivers flood their reservoirs, and the relentless drizzle never truly allows for a perfect game viewing experience. It is this unpredictability of nature that makes Masai Mara migration safari truly unique in itself.
